Short Report: REDD+ Session during the annual conference of Sudan forests

Forests National Corporation (FNC) and Sudanese Forests Society (SFS) organized a REDD+ session on Monday evening (25-02-2013) during the Nineteenth Annual Forests Conference which was attended by all directors of the FNC from the different states of Sudan, and a number of professionals foresters, FNC staff, research centres, universities and a group of interested people. In this gathering Dr. Sayeda Khalil gave a presentation titled: “REDD+ & REDD+ multiple Benefits and co-benefits For Sudan”. The presentation covered an overview of the issues surrounding and opportunities for achieving multiple benefits from reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation in developing countries. It also included a general definition of deforestation and degradation and some example thereof. In addition, the presentation covered main issues for REDD+ and targets for Poor & Multiple Benefits such as direct and indirect effects, as well as tools and guidance to facilitate REDD+. Also Prof. Hassan Osman gave a talk in the session about latest updates of the REDD+ Readiness Preparation Proposal (RPP). This session raised the capacities of state foresters and gave participants the chance to feed back on multiple benefits, the potential areas for REDD+, and on how Sudan can meet their challenges regarding deforestation and forest degradation. It Also provided a platform to exchange ideas between the forest staff in different states.
