During a workshop held in Bagamoyo on 29-30 October, more than 20 Tanzanian REDD+ stakeholders met to review a proposed roadmap highlighting key steps and available data that would allow Tanzania to construct REL/RL(s) and evaluate the performance of its REDD+ activities. The validation workshop was hosted jointly between the Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism and FAO, and chaired by Dr. Suzana Augustino from Sokoine University of Agriculture. Participants learned how other REDD+ countries are approaching the construction of their REL/RLs, and also  discussed a proposed step-wise approach that would allow Tanzania to construct its own REL/RLs. Most importantly, the event provided a space to discuss outstanding issues concerning the roadmap. Key discussions included: (1) how to reconcile the various forest definitions used by Tanzania for different reporting purposes; (2) how to reasonably account for historical degradation emissions given limited data availability; (3) how to consider sub-national REL/RLs given that various ongoing REDD+ pilot projects and; (4) how to ensure that decisions on REL/RLs do not limit participation to REDD+ or pre-judge future decisions for creating a fair benefit-sharing mechanism.  The proceedings of the validation workshop can be accessed here: index.php?option=com_docman&task=doc_download&gid=11926&Itemid=53

The final version of the roadmap, along with its background document, will be available in early 2014.
