Benin's first consultation workshop related to REDD+ was held this week with support from the UN-REDD Programme, as the first of several workshops to consult on a draft of the new Forest Law (Code Forestier). The multi-stakeholder workshop was held in the provincial town of Abomey and provided an opportunity for forestry officers and members of civil society to comment on the new law.

During the discussions participants provided recommendations, including a suggestion to include a provision on including women and other vulnerable groups in forest governance. As the current draft introduces the concepts of REDD+ and payment for environmental services; concepts which are relatively new in Benin, the workshop included introductions to these topics for participants. Though Benin has been a UN-REDD programme partner country since 2011, it has recently decided to become more actively engaged in REDD+.
