Representatives from government, research institutes and civil society organisations are meeting this week in Naypyitaw, Myanmar, to discuss the country’s proposed design for its Safeguards Information System (SIS).

Having a SIS in place is a key requirement for countries implementing REDD+, helping them to track their progress in implementing the Cancun safeguards for REDD+. This set of seven environmental and social safeguards are aimed at both promoting the benefits of REDD+ and reducing its risks.

With guidance from the National Technical Working Group on Stakeholder Engagement and Safeguards, Myanmar has made substantial progress in developing its national approach to the safeguards and designing its SIS. Feedback from people at the workshop this week will further refine the SIS design, which is expected to be finalised by the end of this year.
