When we talk about carbon stocks, we often talk about forests. At the same time, often-overlooked peatlands represent one of the largest stores of carbon on the planet. The Global Peatlands Initiative’s (GPI) 3rd Meeting of Partners, gathered more than 300 participants from all over the world to put peatlands back on the climate change agenda. Twenty four partners, including three countries, discussed the crucial role that robust monitoring systems and appropriate policies play in improving the overall management of peatland landscapes. After two days of intensive high-level meetings and discussions, the governments of the three most peat-rich countries in the world – the Republic of Congo, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Indonesia – signed a declaration aimed at protection and sustainable management of this valuable resource, better known as the Brazzaville Declaration.

In January 2017, scientists announced new discoveries showing that the Central Congo Basin Peatlands form the largest area of peat swamp forest in the tropics. Estimates of soil organic carbon stocks in the Republic of Congo and Democratic Republic of Congo have radically increased as a result, to some 30 Gt. Degradation of these peat carbon stocks could have serious impacts on climate.

The Community-Based REDD+ (CBR+) Initiative, a partnership of the UN-REDD Programme and the GEF Small Grants Programme (SGP), supports indigenous peoples and forest dependent communities to engage in REDD+ through small grants (up to US $50,000), capacity building and knowledge exchange. A CBR+ funded project to empower indigenous women in the Democratic Republic of the Congo was recently highlighted in a powerful photo essay "Guardians of the Forest

The CAFI Executive Board and the Government of Gabon are negotiating mutual commitments to implement the Gabonese National Investment Plan that will help deliver the country’s forest-based commitments under the Paris Climate Agreement.

Technical experts gathered in Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire at the fourth and final  regional “Training the Trainers” Workshop to share their knowledge on REDD+ Monitoring, and Measurement, Reporting and Verification. The workshop was hosted by the Global Forest Observation Initiative (GFOI) & GOFC-GOLD from 6-10 February 2017.

The Democratic Republic of Congo has engaged on a dynamic process to program the first tranche of the REDD+ funds received from the Central African Forest Initiative (CAFI) to implement reforms and actions on the ground as delineated in the country's REDD+ investment plan. To that end, the Technical Commitee of the DRC National REDD+ Fund has met four times to date to examine submissions received following calls for proposals, and make recommendations to the Steering Committe led by the DRC Ministry of Finance. Une séance de travail entre la société civile et les ​peuples autochtones congolais​, l’ONG Rainforest Foundation Norway (RFN) et le PNUD a eu lieu fin mai pour encadrer des discussions sur le design de la phase d’investissement REDD+.  ​Il s'agissait ​pour la société civile de réfléchir à son ​rôle dans la mise en œuvre du plan d'investissement: les opportunités, les priorités stratégiques, les défis et les « règles du jeu », incluant leur rôle et responsabilités liée à la  représentation de la société civile dans le Comite du Pilotage de Fonds National REDD+.

The Central African Forest Initiative (CAFI) and the Minister of Finance of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) have signed a letter of intent (LOI) for US$ 200 million to address deforestation and forest degradation in the country and to promote sustainable development.
