To protect against potential risks and promote benefits from REDD+, seven safeguards must be supported throughout the implementation of REDD+ actions. These are known as the "Cancun safeguards", and were agreed at the 16th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate held in Cancun in 2010 (COP16).

Many UN-REDD partner countries are developing safeguards approaches and information systems with UN-REDD Programme support. To help share the latest information on country progress, this page includes links to workshop reports and materials (especially from 2015 onwards) as well as more formally published outputs. Spatial analysis products whose goals include safeguard support are found on the Multiple Benefits Country Resources Hub.

A working conference will take place on March 16 and 17, 2016 in Accra, Ghana, as part of the initiative ‘Forests for the Future – New Forests for Africa’, which aims at large scale reforestation in Africa. New Forests for Africa is proud to announce that the Honorable Mr. Kofi Annan will be a keynote speaker at the conference.

The UN-REDD Programme Africa regional team facilitated a South-South Exchange between Kenya and Ghana that took place in Accra from 5 - 9 October 2015. A six member gender-balanced team of technical experts from Kenya travelled to Ghana to gain knowledge from the Ghanaian experience and exchange with the counterparts on their respective REDD+ visions and their linkages to REDD+ financing while addressing drivers of deforestation according to ecological boundaries. The Kenyan delegation included representatives from the Ministry of Environment, Ministry of Agriculture, Ministry of Finance,  the Kenya Forest Service (KFS) and civil society.

A new video has been launched highlighting lessons and experiences on Safeguards from Africa. The video provides key lessons learned and experiences from participating countries in the UN-REDD Programme Africa Regional Exchange on Country Approaches to Safeguards held in Nairobi in June 2015. The workshop brought together 33 participants from 19 African countries, and 3 participants from Costa Rica, Mexico and Viet Nam. The video highlights participating countries’ opportunity to share experiences and jointly build capacities on country approaches to the Cancun safeguards during South-South Learning Exchanges.

National Commodities Platforms respond to the need for a national coordinated action by all stakeholders to align their activities in the same direction on sustainable commodities, delivering in ways that complement each other. The Green Commodities Programme has just released new briefs on National Commodities Platforms in Costa Rica, Ghana and Indonesia. 

The Capacity Development for REDD+ Regional Data collection workshop took place in Berlin, 28 May-8 June. The main aim of the workshop was the assessment and compilation of forest sector activity data for the GHG inventory for 11 countries from Latin American and Africa. This helped identify the significant data gaps still remaining in most countries which will form the basis for further work on their GHG inventories, with support from the CD-REDD II team. This email address is being protected from spambots.
