El Ministerio del Ambiente del Ecuador, a través del proyecto Evaluación Nacional Forestal, y con el apoyo del Programa Nacional Conjunto ONUREDD, realizará en Quito los días 21 y 21 de junio de 2013 una capacitación dirigida a técnicas/os informáticos de esta cartera de Estado, sobre la instalación, uso y mantenimiento del Sistema Open Foris Collect 2.0, desarrollado por FAO y varios países, incluido Ecuador, para el registro y gestión de los datos de los Inventarios Forestales Nacionales.

El Ministerio del Ambiente del Ecuador, conjuntamente con el Programa de las Naciones Unidas para la Reducción de Emisiones por Deforestación y Degradación de bosques (ONU-REDD), iniciaron desde el pasado lunes 10 de junio de 2013, un ciclo de talleres para el intercambio y análisis productivo con el fin de generar insumos para la definición del mecanismo REDD+. Los talleres se realizarán en diez provincias del Ecuador. Estos encuentros forman parte de la “Fase Preparatoria” en la que se encuentra el país para la implementación de un mecanismo REDD+ de alta calidad.

The Ministry of Environment in Ecuador, as part of the preparatory process for the implementation of a high quality REDD+ mechanism, and with support from the UN-REDD National Joint Programme in Ecuador and the “Sustainable Forest Management against Climate Change” (FAO MFSCC) project will organize the first workshop on “Capacity Building in Allometric Equations for Technical Personnel” to take place in Quito from 13 to 17 May 2013.

As part of the stakeholder engagement process with civil society, indigenous communities and peoples, Afro-ecuatorian and montubio communities in the preparatory phase for REDD+ implementation in Ecuador, the Ministry of Environment, GIZ, and the UN-REDD National Joint Programme will hold a second workshop on “Training trainers in the use of informational material on REDD+ for communities in Ecuador”. The workshop will take place in Quito from 12 to 18 May, 2013.

Ecuador hosted the first Regional Workshop on National Forest Monitoring Systems for REDD+ in Latin America from 23-26 April 2013 convening over 11 countries from the region as well as members from international organizations who shared information and experiences on NFMS implementation.

Colombia, Ecuador, Honduras, Mexico, Panama, Paraguay and Peru shared their perspectives and ideas on anti-corruption for REDD+ during the Forum held in Lima, Peru last week on "how to prevent corruption in REDD+ and help REDD+ meet its climate and development objectives". UN-REDD will support the organization of two consultation workshops, in Lago Agrio (21August) and Quito (24August), to launch the Participatory Governance Assessment for REDD+ (PGA) in Ecuador. The workshops will bring together representatives of the government, of civil society and of indigenous peoples. More information on the workshops will be available shortly. The inception Workshop for the UN-REDD National Joint Programme (NJP) successfully took place on Thursday 12 July 2012, in Nueva Loja-Sucumbios.  The UNREDD NJP was introduced from a global and national perspective. The workshop featured guests such as the Governor of Sucumbios, Mayors from local governments, Presidents of Parish Councils, National and International NGOs, Communities and Indigenous, Afro-Ecuadorian and Montubio Organizations. The diversity of the participants allowed interventions with a high level of debate and substantive contributions.

On 17 and 18 November, meetings between the Government of Ecuador (Ministry of Environment), UNDP Ecuador and the UN-REDD Programme will take place in Quito to further discuss the PGA for REDD+ approach and define the next steps to get the pilot initiated. More details.

After reviewing and addressing comments from the Policy Board and independent reviewers, Ecuador signed its National Programme Document on October 28. Final signed document and response matrix to comments can be accessed on the Ecuador country page.

 

Hosted by UNEP’s Finance Initiative (UNEP FI), this webinar will be an open and critical debate to explore the key issues surrounding the financing of any future REDD+ agreement from the perspectives of the different stakeholders involved – developed and developing country governments, civil society and the private sector.
