In January 2017, scientists announced new discoveries showing that the Central Congo Basin Peatlands form the largest area of peat swamp forest in the tropics. Estimates of soil organic carbon stocks in the Republic of Congo and Democratic Republic of Congo have radically increased as a result, to some 30 Gt. Degradation of these peat carbon stocks could have serious impacts on climate.

The 2017 UN-REDD Africa Knowledge Exchange, held from 19-21 September 2017 in Nairobi, Kenya, saw the participation of 22 forestry sector experts, civil society and indigenous peoples representatives from 11 UN-REDD Partner Countries in the region. The event provided a space for focused technical dialogue and sharing of experiences on how participating countries are navigating the transition from REDD+ readiness to implementation.

The Community-Based REDD+ (CBR+) Initiative, a partnership of the UN-REDD Programme and the GEF Small Grants Programme (SGP), supports indigenous peoples and forest dependent communities to engage in REDD+ through small grants (up to US $50,000), capacity building and knowledge exchange.
