The UN-REDD Programme Africa regional team facilitated a South-South Exchange between Kenya and Ghana that took place in Accra from 5 - 9 October 2015. A six member gender-balanced team of technical experts from Kenya travelled to Ghana to gain knowledge from the Ghanaian experience and exchange with the counterparts on their respective REDD+ visions and their linkages to REDD+ financing while addressing drivers of deforestation according to ecological boundaries. The Kenyan delegation included representatives from the Ministry of Environment, Ministry of Agriculture, Ministry of Finance,  the Kenya Forest Service (KFS) and civil society.

A new video has been launched highlighting lessons and experiences on Safeguards from Africa. The video provides key lessons learned and experiences from participating countries in the UN-REDD Programme Africa Regional Exchange on Country Approaches to Safeguards held in Nairobi in June 2015. The workshop brought together 33 participants from 19 African countries, and 3 participants from Costa Rica, Mexico and Viet Nam. The video highlights participating countries’ opportunity to share experiences and jointly build capacities on country approaches to the Cancun safeguards during South-South Learning Exchanges.

In the Republic of Congo where approximately 69% of the land is covered by forests, the tenure security of forests is a critical consideration. From 6-8 October the Congo hosted its first national workshop on the Voluntary Guidelines on the Responsible Governance of Tenure (VGGT).  This national event brought together stakeholders and high level decision makers from various sectors to discuss the relevance of the VGGT for the Congo.  

Building on synergies between REDD+ efforts to manage forests more sustainably and the opportunity to collaborate more closely with other relevant ministries and sectors, the REDD+ Focal Point, Mr. Georges Claver Boundzanga delivered a stimulating presentation on the first day.  He introduced REDD+ and described the important tenure aspects which are part of the country's REDD+ Strategy.  Georges' emphasized the important linkages between tenure and forestry and welcomed collaboration to achieve mutually beneficial goals.

Six African nations have agreed with donors on a plan to protect the tropical forests of the Congo basin, the second biggest in the world after the Amazon's, to help ease poverty and combat climate change -- with the support of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the World Bank and the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).

The forest cover change map of Republic of Congo for the period 2000-2012 was created by the National Centre for Assessment and Management of Forest Resources and Wildlife (CNIAF) with FAO's technical assistance through the UN-REDD Programme.

Benin's first consultation workshop related to REDD+ was held this week with support from the UN-REDD Programme, as the first of several workshops to consult on a draft of the new Forest Law (Code Forestier). The multi-stakeholder workshop was held in the provincial town of Abomey and provided an opportunity for forestry officers and members of civil society to comment on the new law.

The government of Ethiopia and the UN-REDD Programme have joined forces to support the region of Benishangul Gumuz to benefit from REDD+. On 2 September 2015, the regional authorities in the region's capital, Asosa, hosted a REDD+ inception workshop with the aim of building capacities and getting ready for REDD+.

The three-day Knowledge Exchange on Policies and Measures in the framework of the REDD+ strategy launched today, 25 September 2015 in Abidjan with the participation of Madagascar, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Tunisia and Cote D’Ivoire. The workshop is organized by the UN-REDD Programme's regional Africa office and provides the space for learning and exchange of experiences between countries on the development of REDD + policies and measures.
