San José, Costa Rica – 10 November 2015:  The 15th meeting of the UN-REDD Programme’s Policy Board took place in San José, Costa Rica this week, during which three new National Programmes were presented by Chile, Myanmar and Peru, and support for the 2016-2020 phase of the Programme was reaffirmed by its three collaborating UN agencies – the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the UN Development Programme (UNDP) and the UN Environment Programme (UNEP).

The 2015 Global Joint FCPF/UN-REDD Programme Knowledge Exchange Day took place Sunday, 8 November 2015 in San Jose, bringing together more than 100 REDD+ practitioners from around the globe to share and gather experiences and lessons learned.

The UN-REDD Programme is now recruiting a Chief Technical Advisor (CTA) for the UN-REDD National Programme in Mongolia. The CTA will take responsibility for the effective oversight and coordination of all technical aspects of the National Programme.

The UN-REDD Programme and Mexico's National Forest Commission (CONAFOR by its acronym in Spanish) are organizing the Regional South-South Exchange "Practical Experiences towards the Implementation of the Warsaw Framework for REDD+". The event will take place in Guadalajara, Mexico on August 11-13, 2015.

The Inception Workshop of the UN-REDD Programme in Argentina successfully took place the week of 13 July 2015 at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Buenos Aires. The event was attended by civil society, indigenous organizations, government institutions and academia, and was organized by the Argentinian Secretariat of Environment and Sustainable Development and the UN-REDD Programme agencies: FAO, UNDP and UNEP.

Dar es Salaam, 9 July 2015 – Deforestation in Tanzania could cost the national economy 5,588 billion Tanzanian Shillings (US$3.5 billion, based on 2013 exchange rates) between 2013 and 2033 on current trends, highlighting the importance of investing in the forestry sector to alleviate poverty and boost growth, according to a new report released today.

There is still much to be done in order to execute the implementation model proposed in Mexico’s REDD+ Special Programs. Mexico’s Civil Council for Sustainable Silviculture (CCMSS) has recently launched its study “Review of REDD+ implementation in Mexico: Analysis of the Special Programs in REDD+ Early Action Areas.”

The UN-REDD Programme has considerably grown in Latin America and the Caribbean in the recent years with new National Programmes in Argentina, Honduras and Colombia, as well as Targeted Support initiatives in Costa Rica, Ecuador, Mexico, Peru and Chile. This involves the creation of new project management units that require training and capacity development in the various strategic areas of the UN-REDD Programme, including stakeholder engagement, gender equality and knowledge management.

On 22nd May 2015, the Sri Lanka REDD+ National Programme website was launched at the International Day for Biological Diversity (IDB) celebration event. The IDB event was held in Colombo under the patronage of Hon. Maithripala Sirisena, His Excellency the president of Sri Lanka. Hon. Duminda Dissanayaka, Minister of Irrigation and Agriculture launched the Sri Lanka REDD+ website presenting it to stakeholders and the public.
