Episode 1: Tanzania (REDD+ and the future of African Forests)

Uploaded By Maddie West

The video highlights key lessons learned in Tanzania during the implementation of forest conservation projects at the local level, and explores the need for scaling up to the national level. It shows the important role of stakeholders in Tanzania who are working on REDD+ through national programme development, awareness raising, advocacy and pilot project implementation.

Tanzania, as a 'REDD+ early mover', has revealed that forest protection and livelihood improvement can go hand-in-hand. Pilot projects in Tanzania demonstrate that REDD+ can provide new resources and opportunities to strengthen forest communities’ tenure when appropriate laws are in place, implemented and enforced.

The video demonstrates the importance of community participation and engagement in livelihood activities which can enhance forest management and ownership overall. Finally, the video highlights how REDD+ awareness-raising is leading to greater understanding of forest conservation benefits, and in turn changing attitudes on charcoal production and wildfires in village forests.
